Stephen Lang And Two More Join The Peter Jackson Produced Mortal Engines

Stephen Lang ("Avatar"), South Korean singer/actress Jihae, and newcomer Leila George have joined the cast of Mortal Engines, the Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of Philip Reeve's young adult book series.

Planned as a feature film franchise, Mortal Engines takes place in a world deployed of natural resources, where Earth's cities roam the globe on gargantuan rolling tracks to hunt for smaller cities in order to acquire whatever resources and technology they still possess. On day, the story's hero, Tom Natsworthy, comes across a mysterious woman, thus kicking off his, hers, and ours, adventure.

Mortal Engines will be directed by Christian Rivers, a visual effects supervisor turned director who previously worked with Jackson as a storyboard artist on Dead Alive and Heavenly Creatures, before serving as visual effects art director on Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise, and splinter unit director on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Most recently, Rivers worked as a second unit director on David Lowery's Pete's Dragon for Disney.

The project is being financed by MRC (Media Right Capital) and Universal, with Jackson and his wife and partner Fran Walsh ("The Lord of the Rings," trilogy) producing alongside Zane Weiner ("The Hobbit"), Amanda Walker ("The Hobbit"), and Deborah Forte ("The Golden Compass").

Lang's character is being kept under wraps, but Jihae will play Anna Fang, a member of a violent group that fights the mobile cities, while George is set to play Katherine Valentine, the daughter of one of the most powerful men in London, who is trying to get his hands on a weapon of mass destruction.

Lang, George, and Jihae join Misfits' Robert Sheehan, who will be playing the lead protagonist Natsworthy.

Jackson, Walsh, and Philippa Boyens wrote the adaptation.
